These skills became essential as the internet became part of everyday life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the digital landscape is changing again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today, students aren&#8217;t just searching the web. They&#8217;re interacting with systems that can generate answers, write essays, solve problems, and influence decisions in real time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That raises an important question: Are we preparing students to be good digital citizens or good <strong>AI citizens<\/strong>?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-video\"><video height=\"720\" style=\"aspect-ratio: 1280 \/ 720;\" width=\"1280\" controls src=\"https:\/\/www.imtlazarus.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Digital_to_AI_Citizenship-1-1.mp4\"><\/video><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The internet gave us information. AI gives us answers.<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For decades, digital literacy meant helping students find information and evaluate sources. Search engines returned links. Students still had to read, compare, and draw their own conclusions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI changes that dynamic fundamentally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of a list of sources, AI delivers a finished response. The process becomes faster, but also less visible. Students no longer need to ask <em>&#8220;Where can I find this?&#8221;<\/em> They&#8217;re asking <em>&#8220;Can I trust this?&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s a different skill entirely. And most schools aren&#8217;t teaching it yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What does AI citizenship actually look like?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI citizenship isn&#8217;t about knowing which tools to use. It&#8217;s about developing the judgment to use them well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An AI citizen understands that AI can be helpful without being infallible. They question answers instead of accepting them. They recognize bias, protect their own data, and think critically about the responses they receive&#8230; not because they distrust technology, but because they understand how it works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In many ways, AI citizenship is less about technology and more about thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The goal isn&#8217;t to teach students <em>how<\/em> to use AI tools. The goal is to teach them <em>how to think<\/em> while using them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Access isn&#8217;t enough<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Many schools are focused on the access question right now: which tools to allow, which platforms to approve, how AI fits into the curriculum. These are important questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But access alone doesn&#8217;t create responsible AI use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students need guidance. Educators need visibility. Schools need frameworks that help them understand not just <em>whether<\/em> AI is being used, but <em>how<\/em> it&#8217;s shaping learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s where AI governance comes in; not as a restriction layer, but as an enabling one. At IMTLazarus, we believe governance should create environments where AI supports curiosity, critical thinking, and responsible decision-making. When educators have real visibility into how AI is being used, they can stop simply allowing or blocking it; and start actively teaching students how to engage with it thoughtfully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That&#8217;s where AI citizenship begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Preparing students for a future that already exists<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The conversation around digital citizenship didn&#8217;t emerge because schools wanted to teach technology. It emerged because technology became part of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI is following the same path, faster.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The question is no longer whether students will interact with AI. They already are.
